Data Selection:

How to Use the Tool

Step 1

Select an AHRF Year. This will filter workforce data by the year(s) in which it was collected.

Step 2

Select a Health Profession Type. This will filter workforce data for specific profession types at either the state or county level. You can refine data results further by selecting a Health Profession Category.

Step 3

Select a Population Type. This will filter workforce data based on specific population types. You can refine data results further by selecting a Population Category.

Step 4

Select a State. This will filter county data by a specific state. This filter is only available for county-level data selections.

Step 5

Click "Submit" to see your workforce data selection results.

How to Use the Tool

Step 1

Select a Data Source. This will filter workforce data by the years in which it was collected.

Step 2

Select a Health Profession. This will filter workforce data for a specific profession type at the state level.

Step 3

Select a Data Category. This will filter workforce data based on Race/Ethnicity, Age, or Sex.

Step 4

Select a State(s). Select a state for State 1 for filtering the workforce data by a single state. You may select another state for State 2 (Optional) to filter workforce data by a second state, so you can look at the two states data charts side-by-side for comparison." Note that a summary view for “All States” is also available.

Step 5

Click “Submit.” This will update the data in the dashboard according to the filters selected.

Step 6

Select Display Data as Type. This switches the chart display style for the selected state(s) between Pie Chart or Bar Chart.

Step 7

Under the charts section, you may also view the workforce data in a map view. For the Race/Ethnicity data category the map gradient represents the percentage of underrepresented minorities in the workforce. For Age or Sex the map gradient represents number of Clinicians per 100,000 population. Below the map view the data is presented in a tabular view. You may choose to display the profession’s numerical data as a Percentage (%) or as a Count (n ).

  • Area Health Resources Files (AHRF)

    This dataset provides current as well as historic data for more than 6,000 variables for each of the nation’s counties, as well as state and national data. It contains information on health facilities, health professions, measures of resource scarcity, health status, economic activity, health training programs, and socioeconomic and environmental characteristics. In addition, the basic file contains geographic codes and descriptors which enable it to be linked to many other files and to aggregate counties into various geographic groupings. The Area Health Resources Files (AHRF) data are designed to be used by planners, policymakers, researchers, and others interested in the nation’s health care delivery system and factors that may impact health status and health care in the United States. The AHRF data includes county, state, and national-level files in eight broad areas: Health Care Professions, Health Facilities, Population Characteristics, Economics, Health Professions Training, Hospital Utilization, Hospital Expenditures, and Environment. The AHRF data are obtained from more than 60 sources. The AHRF has county, state, and national level files from the HRSA, Bureau of Health Workforce (BHW), National Center for Health Workforce Analysis (NCHWA) available for download.
