Authorized originating sites* which meet the following criteria shall be designated as eligible for Medicare telehealth payment:

  • Address does not fall in a county that is in a metropolitan statistical area OR
  • Address falls in a rural health professional shortage area

There are no geographic restrictions for:

  • Treatment of substance use disorder and co-occurring mental health disorders
  • Diagnosis and treatment of mental health services (under specific circumstances)
  • Home dialysis for patients with end-stage renal disease
  • Diagnosis and treatment of acute stroke

*Authorized originating sites include:

  • Offices of a Physician or Practitioner
  • Critical access hospitals
  • Rural health clinics
  • Federally qualified health centers
  • Hospitals
  • Hospital-based or critical access hospital-based renal dialysis centers (including satellites)
  • Skilled Nursing Facilities
  • Community mental health centers
  • Renal Dialysis Facilities (under specific circumstances)
  • Mobile stroke units (under specific circumstances)
  • Rural emergency hospitals

The home of an individual is considered an eligible originating site for:

  • Treatment of substance use disorder and co-occurring mental health disorders
  • Diagnosis and treatment of mental health services (under specific circumstances)
  • Home dialysis for patients with end-stage renal disease

All data on eligibility is updated once each year. The results of the analyzer are consistent across the entire calendar year and will be updated on January 1 of the following year.
