Project Name: Maternity Care Nursing Workforce Expansion (MatCare) Training Program (T68)
Applicant Title: Frontier Nursing University, Inc.
Abstract Text: As the largest and oldest continually operating nurse-midwifery program in the United States, Frontier Nursing University (FNU) is perfectly positioned to meet the objectives of the Maternity Care Nursing Workforce Expansion Program. We propose in this project to increase the number and diversity of the nurse-midwifery workforce with a focus on increasing the Hispanic population of nurse-midwives. We will graduate at least 300 nurse-midwives each year. Of these, 30% will report as a person of color, and 10% will report as Hispanic. We will achieve this through increased marketing to specific areas, increased student support once enrolled, a mentoring program, engagement with the Hispanic nursing community, including preceptors and Hispanic-serving schools of nursing, and retention strategies. We have identified four key goals for our initiative: Goal 1: Increase the number of nurse-midwives from underrepresented populations, focusing on the Hispanic population. Goal 2: Increase the retention rate of nurse-midwives from 81% to 85%, focusing on Hispanic Nurses. Goal 3:Enhance maternal mental health training to better address maternal mental health, maternal mortality, and morbidity risk factors. Goal 4:Strengthen community-based training partnerships. Year one of the award period will focus on gathering data, planning, organizing, and implementing proposed initiatives. Implementation for most activities will begin by the end of year one and continue into years two and three. In year four, FNU will continue implementing program activities while evaluating program outcomes and planning for the program's sustainability beyond the award period. Funding Preference: Due to our national reach, and a large percentage of students and graduates in Medically Underserved Areas, FNU seeks funding preference under qualification 2, substantially benefitting medically underserved populations.
