SYHealth operates the Internal Medicine (IM) Residency Program alone and is not a part of a Graduate Medical Education consortium. #4: Year Program First Began Training Residents: SYHealth started its first training cohort in 2020. #5: Program Overview: SYHealth’s program is the first FQHC-operated IM residency program in San Diego County. SYHealth serves the dual role of sponsoring institution and operator of the San Ysidro Health IM Residency program. The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education approved SYHealth for 18 resident slots (six per program year). SYHealth’s residency program focuses on building a workforce of physicians who are underrepresented in the medical field, who are interested in practicing in FQHC and/or community health center settings, and those who have a desire to serve underserved communities and/or medically underserved populations. Of note, one of the graduates from SYHealth’s first cohort has joined SYHealth as a physician after program completion. Residents have the unique opportunity to train in San Diego County’s diverse communities, such as the border region and urban cultural enclaves for immigrant/refugee groups. SYHealth’s FQHC-based training enables residents to have frontline views of their patients’ social determinants of health, teaching residents to view healthcare from lens of their patients. Of the 121,784 patients served by SYHealth annually, 69% are Latino; 88% live at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level (translating to a $60,000 annual income for a household of four); 58% are Medi-Cal beneficiaries; 18% are uninsured; and 41% report being best served in a non-English language. SYHealth’s main clinic campus, SYHealth-San Ysidro Health Center (SYHC), serves as the continuity clinic for the residents. Approximately 83% of patients are Latinos, a reflection of its unique location – less than two miles from the San Ysidro Point of Entry, the world’s busiest land border crossing. SYHealth-SYHC’s 54 year presence in this unique location has positioned the organization as one of the nation’s leading border health experts. SYHealth-SYHC’s medical services are co-located with dental and behavioral health services, which enable care teams to provide in-house referrals to interdisciplinary primary care services. Specialty services (HIV, podiatry, cardiology, etc.) and alternative care (chiropractic) care also housed in this clinic. In addition to in-person care, SYHealth-SYHC is equipped for telehealth via SYHealth HeathLine, the health center’s virtual clinic. #6: Total Resident FTE Positions Requested to be Funded for all Post-Graduate Years of Training: 14 (6-6-2) #7: Resident FTE Positions Requested to be Funded for AY2024-2025: 14 (6-6-2) #8: Rotation Sites: Residents rotate at three SYHealth satellite clinics. SYHealth-Chula Vista Senior Health Center (Chula Vista, CA) is a clinic tailored for patients age 55+ years old. SYHealth-El Cajon (El Cajon, CA) serves as a medical home for Arabic-speaking Middle Eastern refugees. SYHealth-Community Heights Family Medicine (San Diego, CA) is located in the heart of one of the city’s Asian cultural district and where many Vietnamese and other Southeast Asian patients receive care. Scripps Mercy Hospital’s Chula Vista and San Diego campuses serve as the hospital rotation sites, and their patient population is very similar to SYHealth’s patients. Both hospital campuses have provided resident training in prior academic years.
