Abstract Text: Project Title: Southern Illinois University Edwardsville FY 2023 Nurse Anesthetist Traineeship Program Organization: Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, Department of Nurse Anesthesiology Address: Alumni Hall, Box 1066, Edwardsville, Il 62026 Project Director Name: Leah Baecht, DNP, CRNA, APRN Contact: xxx-xxx-xxxx (Office); xxx-xxx-xxxx (fax) Overview of Project: The purpose of this project is to help reduce health disparity in rural and underserved communities through improving workforce distribution of highly qualified and diverse nurse anesthesia providers. Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) addresses this national healthcare goal through the selection of a diverse student body which is representative of the community and by providing clinical training within diverse practice models and settings that are located across diverse geographical locations. Program Priorities: The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' (HHS) clinical priority of combatting the opioid crisis is shared by SIUE and supported through the nurse anesthesia Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) curriculum. Educated and skilled in alternative and multimodal pain management, our doctorally prepared graduates will be leaders in addressing the opioid epidemic. This is achieved through didactic course work paired with rich clinical experiences in which students become proficient in administering ultrasound guided regional anesthesia and practicing opioid sparing multimodal pain management. Doctoral education empowers our graduates to identifying clinically relevant problems and use evidence to implement projects that improve patient and healthcare outcomes. Project Objectives: This project will accomplish four primary objectives related to combatting the opioid crisis, especially in rural and underserved populations. • Provide didactic training to Student Registered Nurse Anesthetists (SRNAs) related to pain management, opioid sparing anesthetic techniques, opioid abuse management, opioid abuse prevention and treatment. • Provide clinical training to Student Registered Nurse Anesthetists (SRNAs) related to pain management and opioid sparing anesthetic techniques. • Continue a wellness promotion program for Student Registered Nurse Anesthetists (SRNAs), potentially reducing the risk of opioid abuse among SRNAs. • Strengthen the healthcare workforce in rural and underserved populations by connecting skilled professionals to communities in need. Project Methodology: Funding for this project will help reduce the financial burden related to the cost of education for our licensed registered nurses enrolled as full-time students in our doctoral nurse anesthesia program who consider serving an Underserved Area following graduation. Funding will help prepare students to address the opioid epidemic through didactic and clinical training, in addition to the implementation of wellness initiatives. The funding received will be distributed among eligible students to assist in meeting the costs associated with matriculation through our accredited program of study. Fiscal records of grant funding and disbursement will be maintained in an Excel file by the Graduate Secretary and overseen by the Program Director and the Assistant Dean of Graduate Programs.
