Applicant Title: THE CURATORS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI
Abstract Text: Address: 2464 Charlotte Street, Kansas City, MO 64108 Project Director Name: Kelli Pryor, DNP, CRNA Contact Phone Numbers: xxx-xxx-xxxx (voice); xxx-xxx-xxxx (fax) Email: xxxxxxx@xxxx.xxx Website address: https://www.universityhealthkc.org/education/nursing/school-of-nurse-anesthesia/ The United States is experiencing a staggering shortage of certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs). The shortage provides opportunities for nurse anesthesia educational programs to use innovative approaches to grow the CRNA workforce. The University Health Truman Medical Center School of Nurse Anesthesia, in cooperation with the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Nursing and Health Studies, proposes a Nurse Anesthesia Traineeship (NAT) project. The project aims to increase the number, diversity, and distribution of nurse anesthesia graduates who are prepared for the full scope of practice as independent and autonomous CRNAs. The project setting of a hospital-based nurse anesthesia educational program located in a medically underserved area/population and offered in collaboration with a public university presents distinct advantages for the project. The specific project goals are as follows: 1) provide traineeship awards to students who best meet NAT eligibility criteria; 2) recruit, train, and provide support to students including those from disadvantaged backgrounds or underrepresented racial and ethnic minorities; 3) enhance didactic and clinical curriculum to provide experiential learning opportunities which focus on the delivery of culturally competent care and addressing health equity and social determinants of health in vulnerable and underserved populations; and 4) increase the proportion of nurse anesthesia program graduates choosing to practice in rural and underserved areas. NAT funding is sought to provide meaningful financial support for 50% of students. Proposed project activities are anticipated to make a significant long-term impact on the CRNA workforce.
