Project Name: Advanced Nursing Education - Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners Program (T96)
Applicant Title: VANDERBILT UNIVERSITY
Abstract Text: Title: ENPs-CARE: A program to sustain Emergency Nurse Practitioner Comprehensive Sexual Assault Response Project Director: Jennifer Wilbeck, DNP, ACNP-BC, FNP-BC, ENP-C, FAANP, FAAN Applicant Organization: Vanderbilt University Address: 461 21st Avenue S, Nashville, TN 38240 Contact Phone Number: (O) xxx-xxx-xxxx Email: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx@xxxxxxxxxx.xxx Website: https://nursing.vanderbilt.edu/ Funds Requested: $1,500,000 Statutory Funding Preference is requested as the project will substantially benefit underserved populations. Vanderbilt University School of Nursing (VUSN) seeks funding to continue and enhance our innovative Vanderbilt Nursing Education Program–Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (VEP-SANE) project. The new program, ENPs-CARE: A program to sustain Emergency Nurse Practitioner (ENP) Comprehensive Sexual Assault Response, will expand trainings and retention strategies in the existing VEP-SANE program to increase, diversify and sustain the national SANE workforce. Building on prior successes, we will develop and implement an innovative curriculum for nurse practitioners in emergency care settings (ENPs) detailing holistic care for assault survivors in rural and underserved areas (RUA). Within the four specified HRSA goals, we aim to achieve four project objectives: Objective 1: By June 30, 2027, 90 ENPs either complete all requirements for SANE-A (adult/adolescent) or SANE-P (pediatric/adolescent) eligibility and/or certification. ENPs-CARE will target the over 26,000 ENPs estimated to be working in emergency care settings through new and existing partnerships with national health systems, especially those in RUAs. Targeting practicing ENPs as trainees increases the project’s national impact among safety net settings in underserved areas. Objective 2: By June 30, 2027, 70% of enrolled trainees complete the ENPs-CARE curriculum and are deemed competent to practice as a SANE. Meeting all International Association of Forensic Nurses/Academy of Forensic Nursing competencies, the newly developed curriculum will include asynchronous modules, synchronous clinical competency experiences and VUSN’s web-based tracking system for progression towards SANE certification eligibility. Data from our prior grants indicate as many as 80% of trainees will be deemed competent as a SANE but only about 15% will be able to complete the national certification process within the grant period. This underscores the need for a 1-year trainee follow-up post grant. Objective 3: Expand access to sexual assault forensic examinations, especially in RUA by maintaining and expanding engagement of interprofessional partners. We will maintain and expand our existing Advisory Board and network of interprofessional partners, current ENP preceptors, national hospital systems, SANE and forensic experts, and graduates of our VEP-SANE (1) and (2) projects; many in RUA and/or healthcare provider shortage areas. Objective 4: Foster an environment that supports SANE training, practice and retention including new trainees as well as prior VEP-SANE trainees and graduates through networking opportunities and availability of continuing education credit. ENPs-CARE builds on our prior grants and uses innovative strategies to achieve these four objectives. Examples include: continuing education credits for completion of an expanded and sustainable curriculum including a modular course offered in a virtual, asynchronous format; redesigned clinical competency experiences with enhanced simulations and telehealth inclusion; expanded engagement strategies with interprofessional partners, professional organizations, and preceptors; a Community of Practice promoting networking; and bolstered strategies to promote the SANE role and national certification among ENPs. Successful completion of ENPs-CARE will increase practicing SANEs nationally in RUA and enhance sustainability for future SANEs, thus meeting public health needs.
