The Nursing Anesthesia Program (NAP) is a 36-month program full-time study leading to a Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree. The curriculum includes 112 semester hours: 65 semester hours of didactic study, 5 semester hours of simulation/laboratory instruction and 43 semester hours of clinical instruction. Program graduates are eligible for certification through the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA). The NAP is accredited through the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (COA). Needs to be addressed: The Nursing Anesthesia Program admits one new class each academic year in the spring semester. The maximum number of full-time students for the program is 120 (total): 40 new admits, 40 first year students who are in the first semester of clinical rotations, and 40 second year students who are in the final semester of clinical rotations. New cohorts begin in August and graduate in August. Students who are entering or are currently attending clinical are eligible to receive a stipend from this grant to help defray associated educational and clinical practicum costs. Proposed Services: The focus of the DNP programs at AU is to prepare Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists to provide health care to a variety of populations with major goals to increase the quality and years of a healthy life, and eliminate health disparities. The Augusta University Nursing Anesthesia Program prepares nurses to be autonomous, advanced practice nurses to deliver quality services for patients throughout Georgia who require anesthesia care. Forty-two clinical sites throughout the southeast provide nurse anesthesia students access to diverse clinical experiences in tertiary care, community-based and rural settings. More than half of our facilities are located in Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSA) or Medically Underserved Areas (MUA). All students complete a minimum of eight weeks of their clinical experiences in rural settings. Population Groups to be Served: Augusta University, continues to be dedicated to the health professions and the biomedical sciences. The Nursing Anesthesia Program is offered on the Health Sciences Campus in Augusta, GA. Students come from, and return to, rural and underserved areas of the southeast.
