Project Name: Nurse Anesthetist Traineeships (A22)

Applicant Title: UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH FLORIDA

Abstract Text: There is an ongoing shortage of Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) due to the rapidly increasing demands on the healthcare system, an aging workforce, and healthcare worker burnout. While Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) have been shown to have significant impact on the health outcomes, SDOH education is lacking in nursing curriculum. Simultaneously, the racial and ethnic make-up of the U.S. population continues to significantly outpace that of the nurse anesthesiology profession. Increasing diversity in the CRNA workforce will have a positive impact on health outcomes among those from disadvantaged backgrounds and racial and ethnic minorities by positively impacting their SODH outcomes. The purpose of the Nurse Anesthetist Traineeship Program is to increase the supply and distribution of Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) who are well-prepared and well positioned to practice independently and collaboratively within interprofessional teams and to deliver evidence-based, high quality, and safe anesthesia and pain management services. The goals of this project includes recruiting and educating a diverse population of nurse anesthetists who have access to resources promoting wellness and resiliency, while being educated on health equity and the impact of social determinants of health to promote improved health outcomes in the communities they serve. By utilizing a holistic admissions process, incorporating curriculum on SDOH, and implementing a wellbeing action plan to provide nurse anesthesiology residents and faculty with access to wellness resources, the USF DNP in Nurse Anesthesiology Program can achieve its goal of increasing the supply of resilient, underrepresented minority CRNAs who are armed to improve social determinants of health and access to care in the communities they serve.
