State statutes mandate the provision of hearing screening at any birthing facility with 500 or more births annually. All birthing hospitals screen for hearing as a matter of best practice guidelines. Historically, more than 97% of all infants born in Nevada have a documented hearing screen. The purpose of the Nevada Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) grant application is to develop a comprehensive and coordinated statewide EHDI system of care targeted towards ensuring newborns and infants receive appropriate and timely services including screening, evaluation, diagnosis, and early intervention. This will be achieved by focusing efforts on: 1) increasing health professionals’ engagement within and knowledge of the EHDI system, 2) improving access to early intervention services and language acquisition, and 3) improving family engagement, partnership, and leadership within the EHDI programs and systems. The goal of this application is to support the development of statewide programs and systems of care that ensure deaf or hard of hearing children are identified through newborn and infant hearing screening and receive evaluation, diagnosis, and appropriate intervention optimizing their language, literacy, and social-emotional development.
